Born in Paw Creek in 1911, Baker had a base hit for Cincinnati in the
1940 World Series, his rookie season. He had been in the Yankee's minor league system stuck behind Bill Dickey before getting his opportunity with the Reds. There he had to play behind Ernie Lombardi. In 1943 Baker hit a grand slam against the New York Giants. He played seven years in the majors, but his career was interrupted by military service. He eventually became a coach and then a umpire, spending part of one year as a major league ump. At 94 years old, Baker is one of the oldest living ex major leaguers.
